It is never too late to learn more about the importance of Earth Day and how you can make an impact. Keep reading to learn about what this day is all about and how you can get involved — no matter how small the action you take.
What is Earth Day and why is it important?
Most people are familiar with Earth Day - but, what isn’t as well known is its history, what the day represents, and why it is so important for each of us to care about.
Earth Day is an event celebrated on April 22nd that marks the anniversary of the birth of our modern environmental movement, which began in 1970. What once started as a day of awareness for the environment by United States Senator, Gaylord Nelson, is now a day for people in 190 countries around the world to pause and think about ways they can protect and preserve our planet.
Throughout the month of April, which is recognized as Earth Month, people across the world are encouraged to pay more attention to our climate, our ecosystems, and the impact each of us has on the world around us — otherwise known as our environmental footprint. Not only is awareness critical on Earth Day but action matters, too. Across the globe, people attend events, clean up litter, plant trees, donate to environmental causes, and much more.
Being the one day a year that everyone is reminded of the importance of caring for our planet, Earth Day has always mattered. However, with the growing concerns about climate change, deforestation, pollution, animal extinction, and other environmental issues, each year, this day becomes increasingly more significant.
Five ways you can invest in our planet.
Now that you know more about Earth Day, you are ready to do your part to invest in our planet! Whether you do one small thing or commit to changing your lifestyle, any way you can reduce your personal impact on the environment and create a cleaner Earth - that is giving back.
Reduce, reuse, and recycle.
To this day, reducing, reusing, and recycling materials remains one of the easiest ways we can all decrease the negative impact we have on Earth.
The first step is to reduce the amount of waste you produce. This can be done by purchasing only what you need, avoiding single-use items such as plastic bags and straws, and choosing products with minimal packaging. Then, instead of throwing away items after one use, find ways to reuse them.
For example, use cloth grocery bags instead of plastic bags, refill water bottles instead of buying new ones, and repurpose old clothes into rags or cleaning cloths. Finally, when you can't reduce or reuse an item, recycle it. Learn about the recycling program in your area and make sure to separate recyclable materials from non-recyclable waste.
Conserve water.
Water is one of our most essential resources, but it is not one that we have an unlimited supply of. Water conservation is crucial to ensure that generations to come have enough water for themselves and the other species that rely on it.
Conserving water helps to protect aquatic ecosystems and wildlife by maintaining adequate water levels in rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water. It also reduces the amount of water that needs to be withdrawn from rivers and aquifers, which can help to protect sensitive ecosystems and wildlife habitats. By using less water, we reduce costs, improve water quality, and ensure that we have the water needed to make it through droughts.
You can conserve water by shortening the length of your showers, turning off the tap when you’re not actively using it, fixing leaks, and being conservative with plant watering. Paying attention to the amount of water you use and working to reduce water waste will not only help the planet, but you'll save money, too!
Support local farmers.
When it comes to filling your fridge with fresh fruits and vegetables, going local is the way to go. Buying produce from local farmers reduces the carbon footprint of transportation. The food is not traveling long distances, so it requires less fuel and energy to transport, reducing the carbon footprint of your community, and the meals you share with your family.
In addition to reducing carbon emissions, buying from local farmers supports sustainable agricultural practices. Local farmers tend to use sustainable farming practices that can help reduce pollution and prevent soil erosion. These practices can include crop rotation, composting, and reducing the use of harmful chemicals and pesticides. The next time you do your shopping, choose local and know that you’re making the environment a better place for everyone.
Plant trees on your property and in your community.
Planting trees can improve air quality in the surrounding area and promote wildlife. By absorbing carbon dioxide and pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and more, trees can improve the air quality in urban areas and possibly reduce the frequency of respiratory illnesses.
Trees also serve as habitats for various animals and other plants. When we plant more trees, we are giving these species including birds, insects, and fungi the space they need to grow and thrive. At the same time, trees provide a range of ecosystem services, such as soil stabilization, erosion control, and water regulation. Their ecosystem impact prevents soil erosion, reduces the risk of landslides, and regulates water flow. Whether you have extra space in your yard to plant a couple more trees or attend a tree-planting event hosted by your community, it is greatly appreciated by our environment.
Reduce energy consumption.
Reducing energy consumption can also decrease our impact on the environment and mitigate climate change. By doing this, we can mitigate the number of greenhouse gasses that are released into the atmosphere, extend the life of non-renewable fossil fuels, and diminsh the amount of pollution that impacts the health of humans, animals, and plants.
Easy ways to start conserving your energy include turning off lights and electronics when you're not using them, using energy-efficient light bulbs, unplugging what you’re not using, and sealing leaks around doors and windows to reduce heat and air conditioning usage.
Caring for your indoor environment as you care for the Earth.
Having a healthy indoor environment is just as meaningful as having a healthy outdoor environment. When making lifestyle changes that benefit the Earth, make sure that you make changes that improve your safety and comfort at home, too.
Tips on how you can show your indoor environment as much care as you do the outdoor environment:
- Make nature a part of your living space. Having house plants, opening windows, and allowing natural light and fresh air into your home can have positive effects not only on the air you breathe but on your physical and mental health!
- Keep your spaces clean and tidy. By cleaning your spaces regularly, you can reduce the amount of particulate buildup, identify potential problems within your living space, and eliminate the stress you feel when your space becomes too messy.
- Avoid harmful products whenever possible. Harsh chemicals and materials are often found in cleaning supplies, paint, detergents, and other household items. Opting for clean and all-natural solutions, and keeping smoke out of your home, will keep your air cleaner.
- Add an air purifier to your home! With the right air purifier, you can remove harmful ultrafine particles including pollen, dust, mold, and more.
